Record
Keeping
The following information relates to psychologists only.
We recommend you check with your professional body
regarding your obligations.
The legal requirements for psychologists to keep clients’
records vary from state to state, and different rules apply to
adults and children. There are also some special conditions
under which records may be deleted.
We suggest you contact your professional body to ascertain the
rules relating to your state and particular circumstances, however,
in Victoria, the Victorian Health Records Act (2001) requires that
adult records be kept for seven years after the last attendance and
that child records be kept until the individual reaches the age of
25, or seven years after the provision of the last service,
whichever is the later. There are also requirements regarding
the type of records, storage, access and disposal. Your
professional body should be able to assist you to ensure you meet
your obligations.
